1 week left...

Friday, 29th November, 2013 – 7.4km Recovery Run (5:49/km)
Went out for this run quite late in the evening as I had been busy doing a few small jobs. Nice and relaxed recovery run after last nights big effort.

Saturday, 30th November, 2013 – Rest Day
A late night last night meant I wasn’t really in the mood for a run today and with it being taper a day off was due anyways.

Sunday, 1st December, 2013 – 20.0km Medium Long Run (5:14/km)
I met up with Anto again for this one. We did a big loop of Ballymun Rd., Griffith Avenue, Coast Rd, Raheny, Coolock and home. A nice run where we pushed it a little fast to 5:00/km for the first 10 kms and then eased back for the remainder of our 20km. I was surprisingly a little stiff/tired after this run.

Week 47 Summary:
RTW: 6 from 7 days
DTW: 64.6 km
DTY: 3,645.6 km

So, a good seven days of running in my penultimate week. Mostly this week it will be recovery paced run with a couple of MP kms thrown in.

Taper boredom

I came across a few photos on Facebook of last weeks Parkrun (photos courtesy of Peter Veale/Flickr)

Monday, 30th September, 2013 – 11.9km Easy/MP run (4:49/km)
I was feeling remarkably fresh after yesterdays run so when I went out this evening the plan was to run at easy pace, 5:00/km +/- a few seconds. However, by the end of the first warm-up km I decided to push it on a little faster and before I knew it I was effortlessly running around 4:50/km. Very pleasantly surprised at this so maintained it for most of the remainder of the run. The legs were feeling fine and the HR averaged at 142bpm so that was very positive. Noticeably, the temperature out there felt perfect for me so no doubt that aided the relaxed HR.

Nice to string two positive runs together after a bit of a crap few weeks. On that note, with September now completed, I ran 333.4km (207 miles) for the month. I also seem to have finally dealt with the niggly, floating injury. I was doing a bit of foam rolling on the hamstring last week when I decided to do a bit on my left calf also. It was only then I realised how tight and sore it was to roll it, something that I'd not noticed while running or walking. After a few evenings of just 5 mins work on the calves to loosen them up I seem to have become much more flexible all over! I suppose it goes to show a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link...

Tuesday, 1st October, 2013 – 7.4km Recovery run (5:21/km)
I still felt pretty fresh going out for this run so I'm beginning to get a little more optimistic about Chicago at last. The evening was nice and mild but the rain was still quite heavy through parts of the run. Nothing much more to report really apart from I got back in time to savour Arsenal's excellent win against Napoli. It's funny how £42million can be a steal, yet it's true!
Mesut Ö-zil, Mesut Ö-zil,  olé, olé, olé!

Wednesday, 2nd October, 2013 – Rest Day
Tonight was crappy weather so decided to log this as a rest day!

Thursday, 3rd October, 2013 – Rest Day
Busy day with work and when I got home I was a bit jaded so took the guilty step of a second rest day in a row!

Friday, 4th October, 2013 – 11.9km Easy run with 10 x Strides (5:04/km)
This should probably really be described as Fartlek given I started with a recovery 2km, followed by an 'easy-to-MP' 3km before I threw in 10 sets of strides for the next few km. Finished off with 4km @ recovery pace.

Saturday, 5th October, 2013 – 18.6km MLR run with 9km @ MP (4:42/km)
I was planning on getting up for the second St. Anne's parkrun this morning but when i hit the snooze button for the fifth time in a row I gave in to the fact I was far too tired to get up so three hours later I actually got up properly!

With my initial plans now up in smoke I decided to watch a bit of footie and then go for a MLR in the evening. The day was absolutely perfect for running and the first 5km of easy running was getting faster all the time (helped in no small part by the descending profile but really easy regardless. Once I turned on to the Royal Canal my plan was to up the pace to MP while away from road traffic. By the time I got to my turnaround point in Ashtown I had about 4.2km @ MP completed and the return was a little easier given the slight breeze was now on my back. I added a little extra on when I got back onto the Finglas Road to bring it up to 9km @ an average of 4:42/km. The effort was spot on though as my average HR ranged from 148-150bpm with it never going above 153bpm. The legs however felt a bit jaded and slightly niggly which was a little cause for concern. Hopefully the next week will leave them totally fresh.

Sunday, 6th October, 2013 – 7.4km Recovery run (5:26/km)
Just a nice short recovery run tonight on another beautiful evening. Could easily have gone bare-chested around the place it was that mild (plus in the dark my pasty white skin would be more reflective than any man made material!!). Initially contemplated doing a 12km instead but I soon realised I was in the middle of taper and that an extra 5km of slow running would do me no good now!

Week 40 Summary:
RTW: 5 from 7 days
DTW: 57.2 km
DTY: 3,182.8 km
Chicago - 6 days

So, with 1,977 miles it looks as if I'll pass through 2,000 miles for the year in or around the start of Chicago on Sunday. A PB would be a nice way of marking the occasion!

As an aside, my hopes for the end of October for 2 marathons (MCM + DCM) in 24 hours are up in smoke as I worked out this afternoon that our clocks change a week before USA's so therefore 25 hours will have passed between me starting off in DC and finishing (If I manage it!) DCM in 3h55m at 12:55pm. Oh well!

Anyone got a spare ticket...

Oh the Green and Red of Mayo
I can see it still
It's soft and craggy bogland
It's tall majestic hills
Where the ocean kisses Ireland
And the waves carress it's shore
Oh the feeling it came over me
To stay forever more
Forever more

Monday, 16th September, 2013 – Rest Day
Really tired all day so gave into a second successive rest day. :-(

Tuesday, 17th September, 2013 – 11.9km Easy Run (4:58/km)
Almost became a third rest day(!) but just about managed to rescue a run very late in the evening. Fairly miserable out there and I went with the gloves for the first time since Spring.

Wednesday, 18th September, 2013 – 13.1km Yasso Session 8 x 800m (3:12/split)
Decided I’d use the Yasso’s as VO2 training on the run in to the big day. They serve the purpose of speed training but also according to theory, the pace you manage to sustain over 10 x 800m 10 days out from the marathon should approximately equate to the hrs & mins you’ll run the marathon in. So, I was aiming for 3:10 per split in this session which should equate to a 3hr10min marathon.

The evening itself was very blustery, so hardly ideal for this session. I was on my usual stomping ground of the Furze Road for this becaue of it’s flatness. The first two splits were with the wind and came in at 3:15 & 3:14. Not a great start as I was sure things would only get worse. The third split was back into the wind and came in at 3:12 which was a huge surprise! This gave me confidence for the next few which were with the wind again and resulted in 3:07, 3:10 & 3:09. Very happy with these so with just two left I was confident I’d see them all out. Last two were 3:15 & 3:12. So all in all I completed the whole session (Which looked dodgy after the first split!) and averaged out at 3:12. A little outside what I was aiming at from the beginning but if I managed a 3:12 marathon in Chicago I’d be more than happy! The last couple of splits I lost focus for parts of them and that was the reason for the slightly slower times. I’m sure if I was accompanied doing these I’d have maintained pace on them but c’est la vie! A great speed session overall.

Thursday, 19th September, 2013 – 6.4km Recovery Run (5:34/km)
I sneaked in a short recovery run in this morning as I wanted to loosen out the legs in advance of a MLR this evening with Philip. Seriously miserable weather but the nice stuff is on it’s way!

Thursday, 19th September, 2013 – 17.1km Easy MLR Run (5:08/km)
Met Philip in Celbridge for this one. He let me choose the pace but once we got into our stride we ended up going about 15 secs per km faster than planned. It still worked out though and we were able to hold a chat the whole way, so nothing too strenuous. We ran along the Royal canal until 45mins before turning around. We got back in 42mins thanks to the aid of the wind!

One thing of note from the run is that my hip flexors appear to be quite sore and stiff for the first couple of kms so this damn injury seems to be floating around theplace the past few weeks. May need to get a check up by a physio soon…

Friday, 20th September, 2013 – 7.4km Recovery Run (5:36/km)
Very relaxed 6.5km in advance of pacing 1:40 in the Dublin HM tomorrow morning.

So, now that I'm up to date, how about that spare ticket??

Week 38 Summary (so far):
RTW: 5 from 5 days
DTW: 55.9 km
DTY: 3,017.7 km

August Summary

Thursday, 29th August, 2013 – 16.1km MLR with 11.4km @ MP (4:36/km)
MP kms
I called to the Phoenix Park for this run on the way home from work. Plan was 20km MLR with 15km @ MP. My first few steps were a repeat of last night's limp-run so I stopped and did a few gentle stretches. Once I got going again the pain eased off pretty quickly and I ran the first 1.5km at recovery pace. I had reached the canal at Ashtown by this time so I started in to my MP kms.

Immediately I was kicking myself for having chosen an East-West route as the breeze was in my face as I headed towards Blanchardstown. I kept the head down until I got to the 12th Lock gate and found it a bit easier on the return to Ashtown. However, after about 5km I started to feel the effort. I think I might have ran this a bit too close to the LT session on Tuesday.

My form was getting progressively worse as I got closer to Phibsboro and by the time I got there my hamstrings were getting a bit tighter. So, I decided to pause and do a few stretches before turning around into the breeze again. When I got going I tried another km at MP but the pace was 4:44 - about 10 seconds down on target - so I eased back to recovery pace and decided to jog the canal back to Ashtown.

As I returned to the car in the Park I unintentionally upped the pace to close to MP again as I must have found the lack of a headwind allowed me to go faster. Ended up with a bonus 1.4km at MP before I reached the car after 16.1km. I debated tacking on another 4km but with my new mindset I figured these would just be junk miles as they would be no quicker than recovery pace, so instead I went home.

Even though I failed to hit target distances for the session I'm still happy enough with what I did. I'll aim to throw in a few more MP kms towards the end of my LSR on Sat morning. I'm still progressing anyways and feel myself getting stronger week by week, so staying positive in that respect!

Friday, 30th August, 2013 –  11.9km Easy Run (4:56/km)
I managed to dodge a real downpour just as I was about to go out for this evening's run and luckily I managed to dodge it for the next hour. Easy run today and I was prepared for a bit of a struggle but as things turned out I felt good the whole way and was running at that enjoyably hard but not tough pace so was very happy with it by the time I returned home. Hamstring still niggling me but not enough to affect me too much. I'd rate it at 4/10 at the moment. If it gets to 6/10 I'll visit a physio.

Saturday, 31st August, 2013 –  31.8km LSR (5:27/km)
Big step up in distance required for today's LSR. Nothing really suitable in the organised runs in the park so I decided to run a route from home to the Coast Road and then run the seafront before returning via Raheny. It's one of those routes that doesn't seem like 32km but by the end of it today it certainly felt it!

Nice gentle breeze on my back as far as the Coast but then I was facing into it as I ran towards Clontarf with a bit of respite until I got to St. Anne's Park on the way home. Most of the final 11km back was into a wind that was getting stronger by the kilometre. Luckily I was on the last 300m when it really kicked up and started raining to boot. Even happier to be home at that stage! Tough run for the last bit but glad I got it done.

Sunday, 1st Spetember, 2013 –  10.1km Recovery Run (5:31/km)
Met up with Anto for a short run this evening. Kept it short and easy paced.

August Summary
So, August is over and the last 3 weeks saw me return to normal mileage. In total 305km and 25 runs for the month (after a slow start!). Happy to have a 20 miler under my belt by this stage and a few LT & MP runs also. I still appear to be on track for the Athlone HM on the 14th Sept. but need to keep it consistent between now and then.

Battling the breeze...

Monday, 19th August, 2013 – 8.8km LT Run (4:24/km)
I called over to Raheny to watch my footie team play a game this evening. Headed off at half time to go for a run along the seafront towards Howth. Today called for gentle running but after yesterdays easy/recovery run I felt I was feeling up to tomorrow's planned LT run.

So, after only 400m of a warm-up I upped the pace to 4:20/km. I'm still living in a HRM-less world so I was working off pace and effort. This was feeling pretty decent for most of the way until I realised there was probably a good breeze on my back. And so it was proven when I turned around at the Sutton end of the seafront and straight into what was actually quite a strong breeze. I knew this was gonna mess up my average pace but that was OK as I was maintaining the effort. The return journey had a much higher average pace but once I got to my final km I reached a bit of shelter and the pace dropped to 4:14/km which proved that I had kept to a steady effort the whole way.

Very happy with this run as I felt good for all 8km @ LT effort. If I can get to a level of 12km @ LT before the Athlone HM then I'll be relatively pleased. Got back to the match in time for the last 10 mins of the game, just after our keeper got his 2nd yellow. Game ended up 3-3 and 10 v 9 players!

Tuesday, 20th August, 2013 – 11.9km Recovery Run (5:25/km)
Still a little tired after the LT session last night so lucky that the schedule called for a no brainer recovery run. I had contemplated just doing a 7km version but figured I'd get the extra 5km as per plan. However, I think these 11.9km recovery runs are in junk mile territory. I don't think they benefited me much/at all for the first half of the year. In fact the extra 5km probably only leaves me a bit tired again for the next session thereby undoing all the good work! So, I think in future I'll keep recover runs to no longer than my 7.4km loop and keep the recovery days very easy. For my easy runs I will still run the 11.9km loops though as they are proper training rather than recovery sessions.

Wednesday, 21st August, 2013 – 17.2km MLR Run with 9km @ MP (MP Pace: 4:34/km)
I was off work today so for this run I went to Clontarf seafront. I was a bit wary of the strong breeze at the beginning, combined with the fact I still felt a bit stiff from Monday evening. After a 1km warm up I started into the MP kms. I tried to maintain it between 4:30-4:35 and was pretty successful all the way to the Sutton end of the seafront. However, as expected (and like Monday night, only worse!) the wind was very stiff when I changed direction. I finished out the km I was on before easing back to recovery pace. I tried another km @ MP later but that was at a higher intensity and only 4:46/km pace so I just jogged back to the car, which in itself was crappy enough! The weather was very warm too with the car thermo reading 22deg before and after the run and my sweaty t-shirt verified this!

All said though I was reasonably happy with the 9km I managed to get in. Building blocks and all that! Plus, I managed to get in for pacing the Dublin HM for 1:40 on September 23rd. I was gonna be running it at MP anyways (Late 1:30's) so getting the 1:40 pacer job is pretty much perfect for me.

Week 34 Summary (So far):
RTW: 3 from 3 days
DTW: 37.9km
DTY: 2,668.9km

Cork Half Marathon

Sunday 2nd June 2013 – 4.6km Easy run (4:55/km)
I got the train down to Cork the evening before so after manning the pacer stand from 4-5pm and then watching the Ireland v Georgia game in the hotel, it was time to go out for a short leg loosener. I managed to run the last couple of kms of the race course in ideal weather conditions so all was nicely set up for running tomorrow.

Week 21 Summary:
RTW: 7 from 7 days
DTW: 89.9km
DTY: 1,795.1km

Monday 3rd June 2013 – 21.4km Cork Half Marathon (4:39/km)
I ran the one mile from the hotel to City Hall for the pacers meet-up but was there pretty early so went across to the marathon start at 9am. A quick chat with Tom and Eamonn (the 4:30 pacers) and the race was soon started. Great weather for it and I made my way back to city hall to get a bus to the HM start in Mahon. Unfortunately there were a few issues with bus availability meaning that when we eventually got to the race start it was delayed by almost 30 minutes. This allowed for a good chat with several of the pacees. My pacing partner Ben arrived at this time also and before too much of an inconvenience we were walked to the start line itself.

It was just then that I noticed there was no start mat for our chips. This was a big let down for many of the runners who had paid over €50 for this race and now they would only have official gun times and no proper chip times.

The race itself started well. There was some congestion in the early minutes but it was never too bad. Almost immediately the marathon field veered right and we continued along the road and into Blackrock. Not long later the marathon course rejoined our route again. For most of the time along the Marina there was lots of people around us and we were probably carrying about 40-50 pacees with us at this stage.

Throughout the first few kms we were keeping a close eye on the pace as we wanted to ensure the volume of runners didn’t distract us from the main job of keeping a steady pace. The pace bands at the expo stated a 4:44/km pace would complete the 21.1km in 1:40:00. However, these races usually end up being long for GPS devices so I was aiming to keep things closer to 4:42/km and thereby allowing a 50 second cushion for a long course.

I had described the course to pacees as split into one third flat, middle third undulating with the final third flat all the way to the finish. By the time we hit the South Link road we were beginning into the hilly middle third and it didn’t take long for some of our group to drift away around here. We eased off the pace when going uphill to give people a chance to stick with us and regained the time on the downhill and flats. The steepest part of the day came soon after with the corkscrew turn up onto Turners Cross. After this I noticed the beginning of heavy breathing in our group as one by one another bunch of people started to whittle away.

We did our best to coax the gang through the inclines and we were soon at the top of Model Farm Road but the group was now down to about 6 or 7. I was happy to confirm all the hills were done away with now and the run in to Cork should be very manageable. My mind soon changed though as we turned right at the end of Inchigaggin Lane and onto the Straight road only to be met with a strong breeze. This made the 2km stretch tougher than it should have been and around now we noticed our av pace of 4:42/km was going to be very tight for the finish. So, combined with the breeze we now had to push the pace into the late 4:30’s to ensure we finished inside our time. In fairness to the remaining group they kept it going most of the way and by the time we were in the park crossing the Lee we advised a few of the stronger runners to push on, which they did. A couple of other runners started to fade and we did our best to keep them going but it was just a tiny bit too fast for them and they fell away over the closing mile.

With about 1,000m to go myself and Ben were running alone for the first time today. We tried to grab a few people as we went past them on the run-in to the finish but we soon realised we’d need almost a sprint finish from Patrick’s Bridge just to get in on time ourselves! The last few hundred metres was ran closer to 4:00/km pace and as I crossed the line I stopped the watch on exactly 1:40:00! The distance read the course to be 270m long but the reality may well be somewhere in the middle. Thankfully anyone who was fit for sub 1:40 appeared to nail it and the first runners to miss out on the time did so by about 40-50 seconds so they would always have been just a little short of pace regardless.

Afterwards I jogged back to the hotel for a shower before returning to ‘Pana’ for a few pints with some familiar faces as well as some new. Everybody agreed it was a tough day with humidity high from the start but also the sun breaking out later on and making it especially difficult for the marathoners.

Hopefully nothing clashes next year and I’ll be back in Cork once more.Total distance including jog to/from hotel = 24.0km

Tuesday 4th June 2013 – 8.9km Easy run (5:04/km)
Went out very late in the evening for this in order to avoid the sweltering heat. When I actually went outside I discovered the weather was perfect – it was just my apartment that was sweltering! An easy 8.9km followed. I shortened the route to allow for taper and by the time I returned home I barely knew I had been out at all!

Week 22 Summary (so far):
RTW: 2 from 2 days
DTW: 32.9km
DTY: 1,828.0km

Keeping it 'Easy'!

Monday 27th May 2013 – 11.8km Easy Run (5:10/km)
Another 'run of the mill' easy run on the regular figure of 8 route. Began to wane in the last few kms due to effects of the race yesterday.

Tuesday 28th May 2013 – 15.6km Easy Run (5:11/km)
Lovely weather for being outside at long last! A little bit tired after Mondays run but nothing too bad. Today I woke before 6am and for some bizarre reason decided to get up and make the most of the nice morning by going for almost 10 miles! Very enjoyable and was surprised to see the roads evolve from being empty at the start to traffic queues by the end! Think I really should try and get out for more of these types of morning runs.

Wednesday 29th May 2013 – 10.1km incl. 1x2 Miles + 1x1 Mile @ 4:05/km
On the way home from work the car thermostat registered 20 degrees for the first time this year. Happy days although my plan for this evening was not exactly conducive to hot weather.

The aim for this run was the 3rd McMillan session of 2x2 miles followed by 2x1 miles @ 4:02/km. Kept to my local park for this but a number of things conspired against me this evening including the high temperatures, the strong breeze and all the people walking their dogs and kids in the park, all topped off with the few inclines that you really feel when running near max effort! All this meant that by the end of the first 2 mile split I was just about in touch with the target pace (4:05/km) but halfway through the second 2 mile split I was done. The clammy conditions and tired legs led to me quitting with a 4:08/km paced mile. I knew things were already on the downward slope and that it simply wasn't going to happen tonight. On the jog home I reckoned that the fast running from last week and then the big effort in Enniscorthy were probably still in my system. I will give this session another try in a weeks time to see if I fare any better.

Thursday 30th May 2013 – 11.8km Easy Run (4:55/km)
Another very warm and sunny evening. Legs were a bit dead after yesterday but still managed to maintain sub 5:00/km pace.

Friday 31st May 2013 – 20.0km Easy MLR (5:19/km)
Called to the Park after work for a Medium Long run. Parked up beside the Papal Cross and ran towards Ashtown and onto the banks of the Royal Canal. Turned at Castleknock rail station (Path changes from tarred to trail here) and went Eastwards to Phibsbrough before once again turning and returned to the car for a 20km run. Pace was kept at very easy which was a good thing as not sure I had the energy to go much faster!

Saturday 1st June 2013 – 16.0km Easy MLR (5:07/km)
Met my Brother for a MLR in the Park this morning. Similar type route as yesterday but with pace a little quicker. Cooler this morning and I seemed to have a little more energy than the past few warm days. Didn't push it too hard though with one eye on pacing 1:40 in Cork HM on Monday.

Week 21 Summary (so far):
RTW: 6 from 6 days
DTW: 85.3km
DTY: 1,790.5km
